How to learn new skills

It’s never too late to learn new skills. In fact, we continue to learn new skills and knowledge throughout our lives, almost every day, even though we might not realise it. As well as this passive learning, though, it is also important to focus on active learning as well.

What is learning?

First of all, before we get into the nitty-gritty of how we can improve our learning, it’s important to see what exactly it is. We learn when we are given either a mental or physical grasp of a new subject. This could be one that we have never come across before or something that we only have a very basic knowledge of. By trying to make sense of the subject and interpreting it with our own words and actions, we have a much better chance of remembering as much about it for future reference. For instance, by using and trying to understand foreign words and grammar, we are able to learn a new language.

How to learn

Here are the main steps we need to take in order to learn new skills.

Step 1

Set yourself a goal...
Think about what you want to get out of trying to learn something new. Keeping this in mind will help you to stay focused and motivated, so you are less likely to give up.

Step 2

Bite-Sized Chunks...
You won’t be able to learn everything about a new subject all in one go, no matter how hard you try. It’s best to split things into topics and tackle them one by one.

Step 3

Try the 20% Principle...
This is known as the Pareto’s Principle. It states that 20% of your efforts in learning will get you to 80% of your goal. So, once you have mastered one of the bite-size chunks, it will make the rest seem a whole lot easier.

Stages Of Acquisition

These are the stages of acquisition in learning.

This is all about learning to respond with the new skill. This is the stage at which practice makes perfect.
During this phase, the learner will be trying to improve their accuracy of the skill.
Maintenance is all about the retention of knowledge and the skill.

Finally, the learner will start to use the skill in a range of different situations.

Things to learn

These are some key leadership skills that will really help you get ahead in the workplace.

  • Emotional Intelligence. Once you improve your emotional intelligence, you will be able to emphasise with others a lot better.
  • Communication. This is always key for any employee, but leaders need to be effective communicators to take charge and efficiently spread messages.
  • Conflict Management. When issues arise between your staff, you will need to swiftly take action to reach a resolution. Do you know how to recognise the first signs of conflict?
